Runic magic beyond the confines of Norse systems

A recent review of my work, the Left-hand of Odin, was extremely positive. Thank you kindly.

The only negative of the review was that the reviewer felt that the second section of the work which looks at the Runes as a system of initiation and the practical application of the Runes to magical work was too ceremonial. The review felt that the Runes belong in spaecraft, seidr and galdr and took issue with the use of stadhagaldr also.

I must respond that I too used to hold views very similar to these. In order to evolve however, I came to see how the channelling of the energies of the Runes through yogic movements in a manner similar to the application of qi gong, when combined with galdr, furthered the power of the runes. Why limit yourself to one system? Within the work, I offer that the Runes are subjective in their nature — as such, what works for you, works for you. Odin ventured beyond galdr when seeking to learn seidr, so why limit yourself? Dare to move beyond and incorporate other structures that work for your application. The use of an aegishjalmur sigil to channel energies from the eight realms surrounding Midgard is far from the Solomonic tradition that the reviewer interprets as Abrahamic. It is an energy array for channelling causal and acausal energies through the vitki — it is in no way a circle of protection or triangle of binding.

In short, the Runes are keys and take subjective forms for each person who seeks and interacts with them. Why limit your toolkit to a fixed set of parameters? The beauty and power of magic lays in seeking that which works for the self and nothing more. Altering forms, rituals and words for varied means, locations and the operator is where the skill is found. No magical text is intended as a mere ‘recipe’ book, to be followed in strict adherence. Such is the reason why rituals and sigils have variants between historic periods and geographic locations.

I no longer care what pantheon or source an energy or ritual is traditionally associated with. I make use of any and all that serves my purpose. My base is in Runic magic, yet daemonolatory, chaos, ceremonial, hermetic and qi gong all play a role in my workings. Dare to stray beyond the accepted confines of your system. Such is where the left-hand path takes us. Outside the confines of our world is where we encounter new power, destruction and remanifestation in an ever more powerful form.

The Left-hand of Odin

Today sees the publication of my latest work:  The Left-hand of Odin.

31s+PFXcSML._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

Here is the link:Amazon.co.uk: the left-hand of Odin

The book is available in all Amazon markets, as both print and Kindle versions.  Purchase of the print version entitles you to a free Kindle download of the book also.

So what is the book about?  Well, the product description says it all:

As supreme god of the Norse pantheon, Odin is a truly grey god as he blurs the polarised line between black and white magic and morality. Odin is the archetypal god of Nietzschean ideals. Cyneaþsson assesses the roles of Odin as an archetypal god of the left-hand path and similarities between Odin and the Hindu Shiva amongst other deific archetypes. Through an analysis of the left-hand path, morality and magic, Cyneaþsson assesses the lore of Odin from Norse mythology in order to assess his function as an archetypal deity of the left-hand path. Cyneaþsson then presents an approach by which the magus of the left-hand path can redefine themselves and channel their will into magical work with results that manifest either externally or internally. Cyneaþsson here offers a practical application of the Runes as an initiatory tool of the self which function as a set of keys to the deification of the self.

The book will likely offend those upon the right-hand path, as well as those on the Heathen path.  An interesting point — the Heathen path is a much of the right-hand form as Christianity.   Here I take a look at how Odin is Lucifer, Set, Shiva etc.  These are all forms of the dominant archetypal deity of the left-hand path.

The second part of the book has an alternative reading of the Runes.  Here I assess the Runes as a set of keys to the path of internal alchemy and evolution.  I also outline how the left-hand path magician is best able to channel energies of both the causal and acausal planes in order to manifest their will.

Enjoy!

The next book should be out in around two months.

Understanding comes before criticism

Over the last five years of self-directed study, I have adopted the approach that before I may criticise any belief or philosophy, I must firstly understand it.

My beliefs are as clear as possible — a pandeistic, Odinist upon the left-hand path, Yeah. Understand it before you criticise. To understand, you will need to read my second and third books.  Once you have read those, then you need to apply some of the ideas practically.  Knowledge requires both wisdom and practical understanding.  To KNOW is to think and experience.

In order to arrive at my present stage, I have taken upon myself to read a variety of texts. I have a good grasp of Celtic, Finnish, Greek, Hindu, Mesopotamian, and Norse mythology, Mesopotamian mythology is essential before I can seriously study the Abrahamic faiths. Firstly however, I must conclude my study of Egyptian mythology. Then I will tackle the King James Bible, the Qu’ran, and the Book of Mormon, along with some Qabalistic and alchemical works. The subsequent task will then prove to be Buddhism.

I am confident in my beliefs to undertake such a study. I would expect any critic of my beliefs to at least attempt an understanding before launching an attack or query. I offer them the same. I aim not to attack, merely to understand in order that I can defend my theology to those upon these other paths. I even resorted to a study of Richard Dawkin’s, with a view to a comprehension of the core atheist beliefs. Yes, I term the atheist views as ‘beliefs’. I will at some time explain why only a non-theistic Satanist is any where near to the claim of atheist.

Ah…

I may as well summarise that comment on atheism. The atheist claims to hold the opinion that they are evolutionists and that there is no evidence for deity. Aside from the frankly poor arguments of Dawkin’s, the atheist fails in this claim on grounds of their ethics. A true evolutionist would descend into eugenics. Most atheists refrain from such.  They hold human life sacred and above nature, thus they interfere to provide ‘humane Samaritan’ aid. Their socio-ethical views are dictated by the belief that the evolutionary system which would kill the weak is wrong. As such, only the non-theistic Satanist, whom holds themselves superior and above the plebeian herds, is near approach to true atheism.  However, the use of theistic imagery and names prevents the non-theistic Satanist from a true objective atheism that has no reliance upon ritual, imagery, or archetype.  Is the reliance upon such imagery by non-theistic Satanist’s mere showmanship as a cry for attention, or is it evidence of an underlying reluctance to wholly abandon the notion of a non-causal being?

Yule time turning

Yule is upon us. The darkness envelopes me like a comforting blanket or the arms of a lover. Within the darkness lays limitless potential. Light happens, darkness is eternal. As Jung discussed, it is within the darkness that we find the things we do not yet know. To illuminate and know the darkness is the true task of philosophy.

Odd numbered years under the common system are typically more beneficial for my family and myself. In the past we have purchased our own home, married and seen the birth of our daughter in odd years. Even years are generally a mixed harvest. 2014 has been a year of becoming. There has been dissolution on an unprecedented scale. My work environment has changed. My mother passed in May. I have ceased work with local pagan groups. Through the process of a spiritual death, destruction and analysis of the soul– there comes a remanifestation. Thanks to the venom of the dragon Nidhogg I have seen my life torn apart. It is as a direct result of this that I have realised the value of all things. My wife and daughter matter most. I will defend them with my essence. Philosophy has become the clear goal — to illuminate the darkness and find answers that lead to the truth. I must question all things. My will has been solidified. I value myself and realise the potential that now has been awakened within. The cranial exhaust is running hot as I turn to ever increasingly difficult subjects. No more will I conform to playing the role that others seek me to do so for their own benefit. Like the Jungian riverbed, the water has began to flow and once more the mighty flow of my mind will dominate and rise above my environment. As does the water, I will weave the path of least resistance. I will erode the obstacle before me. The fire that burns within is the mighty forge flame on which I remake myself.

As the lyrics of Grand Magus state:

At last there’s a reason to believe
To rise from the depths of misery
My heart clad in iron
My soul clad in steel
The triumph and power achieved

2014 is the year of death.

2015 is the year of rebirth. With a new role at work, a new goal in pursuit of my own potential and a master plan for the family — it is now that I know what the coming year holds. There are plans of which I cannot speak. There exist goals of which I cannot speak. There is also much that I have yet to realise and come to know. I have made the oath and set forth my wyrd for the coming year. My goal is clear. 2015 is the year to arise as per the occult symbolism of the phoenix. I will crush, devour and burn all those that stand in my way as if Napoleon himself had been invoked within me. I have dwelt within the darkness and it has become illuminated for me in the light of my own black flame. I am not the being many perceive. Some see more than others. Very few see the whole. The wheels have already been began to revolve. By October, 2015 nothing shall be the same.

Through knowledge, true knowledge that is, we may come to see the very patterns that underly the manifestation of the universe. I see the flow of wyrd before me and know that I can shape my own path within the pattern of the Norn in accordance with their overall work. Such constructive flow ensures that my own path meets little resistance from that of others. Manipulation of the currents of being is thus enabled. Through the control of chaos, I may manifest the occurrence of events and matter in accordance with my will. Is such not the true goal of the conscious mind? Did the Allfather not ascend to the throne through the assertion of his will to control the chaos? Through ordering the chaos then we can control that which manifests and thus predict the future in accordance with the patterns laid down in the past. Nietzsche’s theory of the eternal recurrence dictates that I am likely to have existed and to do so again. Such materialisation of being also increases the potential that this is not the first time I have proceeded to walk the path that I have now placed before me.

Ask yourself what is your pattern? What do you see from the events of your life that dictates a pattern before you? Once you can identify the pattern —  you can predict and influence it. Through your influence, you take control and become the primum movens.

Does this post matter to you, the reader? To be honest I do not care. In the form of making an oath into the web of wyrd for 2015, I cast forth this form as an oath into the web of the internet. This post is merely a statement of intent. You may or may not realise the impact and changes that I am about to bring upon the world and you may witness them in some form. Though they are not at the level of the Red Magus. I truly now will emerge as a Black Magus.

I am coming.

Closing a door…opening the next

There are times in our lives when things change. It happens to all of us– that moment when you realise that you are a completely different person to a few months ago.

Recently I have realised that I have so little in common with the majority of Heathens. I do not worship– I pay homage and give thanks. I seek to learn the lessons of Odin that I may be at his side, next to Loki. I study the ways of Loki and learn the ways of manipulation from him. If Loki is Odin’s greatest student and confidant; I will be second only to Loki.

Am I Heathen? Yes, in the terms of what our ancestors would have believed. In terms of what the majority of modern Heathen groups practice– then no, I am not of the same beliefs as they. Stephen E. Flowers has coined the term Odian which best describes my approach– to study and emulate the ways of Odin. Odin and Loki are my tutors. They are not there to assist me– they teach me the tools and how to use them, but the application of these in my world is entirely down to the direction of my will. I have allowed my Heathen associations with the Troth and the Kith of Yggdrasil to lapse and cease. The Kith seems to be in stasis anyway as so little activity has emerged there in the last 9 months. The Troth is not what I believe it should be. I have found my group.

The gift is the potential. If you don’t take it out of the wrapping and see what you can do with it, then it may as well have not been given.

I believe in the Heathen gods and goddesses. I am a Heathen. I am an Odian. I am not what you think I am. I am what I desire to be.

I am.

Are you?

Changing the pattern

I feel fresh and energised to undertake my work- that is, the work. The Great work.

The connection I feel to the wild and rugged land of England’s Lake District is indescribable. Visiting feels like a home coming and I always leave feeling supercharged. I have returned home ready to study, ready to write, ready to continue the work placed before me as a student of Odin and most of all I have a clearly focused mind- I know where I will to be 18 months from now and how to make it so…it will be done. The Web of Wyrd may indeed have altered as a result of my days in the Lakes.

I recommend anyone who has the chance to visit the Lake District. The stone circle there (see my past posts and photography section) is the most atmospheric and powerful I have ever visited and despite the presence of new agers- you can still feel the power that flows there. Harness it. Use it. Work with it.

The Web of Wyrd is a tapestry- one which you must step back from before you can see the pattern as a whole and full understand where you have been and why…even more critical is that the pattern ahead is only planned- plans can be changed with the right input. Change the Web so that your contribution to the pattern becomes a highlight, a centre-piece and the focal point when viewed from a distance rather than simply being in the background with the herd.

incredible working

I have done many workings…of various types…with varied success.

Tonight, I completed what may be the most simple working I have yet undertaken- one that whilst being so simple, has left me touched and inspired like never before.

After reading Michael Kelly’s ‘Apophis’, in which he advocates the evolution of ritual into its most simple form of the magi, a candle and little else- I have modelled this into a ritual format of my own.

Incense, some ambient music by Wardruna, a black candle charged and inscribed with the Ansuz rune and that was it. The ritual took place after a rune reading to seek some guidance on life changing matters.

A simple meditation upon the flame and my will formed the working. No ritual drama here.

Not only do I feel reaffirmed as to the path I am walking, but I feel empowered and inspired- as if Odin has renewed the Wod within me and has fanned the black flame of inspiration to allow the triumph of directed consciousness over primal chaos. Ansuz is the answer. Ansuz is the black flame.

The Whitewashing of Witchery in American Neo Paganism- The Taming of the Witch

The Whitewashing of Witchery in American Neo Paganism- The Taming of the Witch.

A brilliant piece of writing- one that I totally agree with.

Wicca and neo-paganism is often found to be in denial as to what it is. You can’t claim to be a harmless and peaceful faith with a ‘harm none’ rede yet have practitioners study curses, hexes and manipulation magics. Gardner himself conducted a rite against the Germans during WWII- I’m sure the results would have included a great deal of harm to the Germans. Chrisitanity and Wicca have much in common- they both deny their origins. The God of the Christians is the Hebraic god of the Israelites- the wrathful god of vengence, slayer of the first born, bringer of plagues, denier of knowledge (Eve of course ate from the tree of knowledge and paid the price for ignoring God’s command to accept existence as it was and not seek to know more)- yet Christians now promote a vision of a sanitised and forgiving God. He still hasn’t delivered them back to the Garden of Eden after millennia- not very forging!

Admit what you are and what you do- the restraints of the right hand are there to confine the sheep with an existence. “Morality is the herd instinct in the individual” said Nietzsche. The herd of cattle does not think for itself, but follows the direction chosen for it. Free yourself. Choose for yourself what is right and wrong and define your own moral code. Selfishness is not a bad trait- to want to improve oneself, to learn, to grow stronger, to progress skills, to have more freedom, to be financially stable- these are not wrongful acts, but are acts of selfishness. Odin is my fultrui and teacher- he did as he chose and slayed his ancestor, learned the magic of seidr when it was forbidden and his grand schemes and plots are played out through to Ragnarok- only then will the plot of Odin, Loki and Baldur be revealed when Baldur can explain what the Allfather whispered to him on the pyre. Odin is known as the grey- a mix of black and white and perhaps this describes his morality and use of magic?

To be selfish is to survive, to improve yourself and overcome adversity. To be selfless is to accept the status quo and live as cattle.

By denying the selfish, self-deification aspects of withcraft- Wiccan’s are missing part of the picture. Knowing only the ‘white’ magical arts is akin to learning martial arts without learning how to use fatal blows- knowing only half of the art will lead to accidents as the true skill to not harming someone is that you know how to do so if you must and so have the knowledge to restrain yourself as required. Wiccan’s have the sword and the shield at hand- yet only select the shield and then ‘ask’ a god or goddess to shape things for them. I’m pretty sure the gods they use must be getting sick of hearing the prayers of request.

The black and white will fall to the grey.
