What is refreshing to see is that others are also able to find the links between ancient shamanism and the modern understanding of science.  It continually fascinates me how our knowledge has not progressed in some 3000-5000 years; we know no more now than the ancient Egyptians and the great philosophers of ancient Greece.  All we have now are empirical measurements to reassure society of that which we once intuited.

New Study Finds Meditation Creates A Distinct Network Of Genes (Anti-Aging) & Improves Cellular Health – Collective Evolution

An interesting article on some of the scientific acknowledgements of meditations benefits.  What must be said in addition to the information in the article and the links is that meditation is far more than simply sitting, breathing and clearing the mind.  True meditation is possible whilst you are walking or engaged in many other tasks.  A focus of the mind upon the task, to be whatever it is you are doing for that moment is key.  I recommend the works of Swami Vivekananda to guide you in developing your meditation ability along with the works of Gurdjieff for the more advanced practitioner.
